Bernard Buffet Biography

(b Paris 1928; d 1999) French painter and printmaker, Bernard Buffet was the primary figurative painter working in Paris in the 1950s. He showed artistic promise from a young age, admitted to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts at fifteen, and he had his first solo show in 1948. His paintings, including portraits, still-lifes, cityscapes and interior scenes, are composed in somber blacks, grays and whites and show the influence of the miserabilisme movement. Buffet’s artistic role models include Rembrant, Gericault, Delacroix, and Courbet and, like these artists, his work exhibits an intensity of emotion. Buffet’s art is said to parallel his personality and also his ascetic appearance. He lead a solitary, melancholy life and after Parkinson’s disease prevented him from working, he took his life at the age of seventy-one.
