Emily M Carr Biography

(b Victoria, British Columbia, 13 Dec 1871; d Victoria, British Columbia, 2 March 1945) Canadian painter, writer. Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Emily demonstrated a childhood interest in nature and drawing. In early adulthood, Carr received formal training at the California School of Design in San Francisco, and later the Westminster School of Art in England. From 1910-1911 Carr lived in Paris, became familiar with impressionism and post-impressionism styles, and exhibited paintings in the 1911 Salon d’Automne. Later that year Carr returned to British Columbia, where she began cultural research of the various indigenous populations settled throughout the Pacific Northwest. Indigenous art, artifacts and spirituality became a major influence on her work. In 1913, Carr began a fifteen-year hiatus from painting while earning her living as a landlady. In 1927, Carr traveled to Ottawa, where she was part of a group exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. While in Ottawa, Carr met Lawren S. Harris and the Group of Seven-- a nationally recognized group of landscape painters. Carr then became an associate of the Group of Seven and resumed painting. The paintings produced in the subsequent years until her death, lead to significant professional recognition for Carr, including a major exhibition in 1938 at Vancouver Art Gallery.
