  • FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR 1870-1871. AIR BALLOON TICKET - An original air balloon ticket for France to Algeria, priced at 20 centimes and dated 26th September 1870. 210mm x 70mm. Green/olive paper. A rare survivor. With a small card bearing a photograph of the 'Committee of British Charitable Fund' seated around a table, with the caption ' Siege of Paris (1870-1871) and a small card depicting a 'Microscopic Photograph' of the Times Newspaper captioned: 'Memento of the Siege of Paris, the Pigeon Letter Post'. When Paris was surrounded and besieged, balloons were used extensively to carry supplies and correspondence into and out pof the city. These tickets often carried propaganda messages. This ticket is printed on the margin with the following: ''Paris defie L'ennemie, France precipite toi toute entire Mort aux envahisseurs!
