Lesser Ury Biography

(b 1861 Germany; d 1931) German painter, Lesser Ury left school to apprentice as a tradesman before studying painting at the Kunstakademie. His interest in daily life, evident in his work, was stimulated by his immersion in the thriving atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Berlin. Here he found his subject matter in the characters he observed in the city’s streets and cafés. The influence of French Impressionist artists is evident in his work, notably that of Degas, whose work often depicts figures in café interiors. Ury’s work was not received well early in his career, but by 1898, he was a member of the Munich Sucession, a group of progressive artists from Germany and Austria. Despite increasing fame, he remained somewhat aloof from his fellow artists throughout his career and died in his studio in Berlin shortly before his 70th birthday.
