"1776" Dated Massachusetts Bay Military Commission Signed by Fifteen Prominent Members of the Council
March 23, 1776-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Partially-Printed Document Signed, by 15 Prominent Members of the Council of Massachusetts-Bay, Very Fine.
Being a 1776-Dated Revolutionary War Military Commission, 1 page, measuring 15" x 12.5" and appointing Noah Whitman as, "second Lieutenant of the Sixth Company of the Third Regiment of Militia in the County of Plymouth whereof Edward Mitchell Esq. is Colonel." Signed by 15 members of the Council of Massachusetts-Bay, including W. Spooner, Charles Chauncey, John Taylor, John Whetcomb and B. White. Countersigned by Perez Morton, Deputy Secretary, on behalf of the Major Part of the Council. Endorsement signed in the lower right corner by Lt. Col. David Johnes and Maj. Eliphat Cary indicating that Whitman appeared before them "and took the oath required to Qualified him for the Trust Reposed in him."
The clerk who filled out this Commission has inked out the printed date statement "in the Sixteenth Year of the Reign of his Majesty King George the Third, Anno Domini 1776," and replaced it in holograph with, "In the Year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred & Seventy Six."
Minor scattered foxing, some separations with small losses along the horizontal central fold, completely backed previously upon craft paper for reinforcement and support from prior framing. The original Embossed "Colonial Minuteman" design after Paul Revere Paper and Wax Seal at the upper left still fully intact and in fine condition. Overall, a wonderful example of this historic "1776" dated Revolutionary War Document, ready for framing and display.
