"An Elegiac Poem on the Death of George Washington Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States."
January 1, 1800-Dated, Memorial Poem Broadside, Printed upon fine Silk, titled: "An Elegiac Poem on the Death of George Washington Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States, Who died at Mount Vernon, Virginia, 14th December, 1799, Aged 69 years. Dedicated to the Citizens of the Unites States." Printed by R. Aitken (Error spelling "RPINTED"), "Threads of History" Item 18 on page 56, Framed, Fine.
This remarkable printed textile is listed in the important reference work, "Threads of History" as item number 18 which was produced by the Smithsonian Institution. Exceedingly rare, Black Print upon fine quality evenly toned Silk, Memorial Broadside issued closely in the wake of the beloved George Washington's Death. Washington died on December 14th, 1799 and this printed textile was produced and dated January 1, 1800. It measures about 13" x 18" having with some minor spots, expected age and scattered splits, with a long separation at the centerfold. Otherwise, all text is clear and fully readable with the appearance of being a period example is quite presentable condition. It is remarkable that any example has survived to this date. Housed nicely matted within an modern black painted decorative wooden frame measuring 22.5" tall x 17" wide, ready for hanging upon display.

This historic original Printed Poem is presented in three vertical columns and further displayed within a pair of outer decorative pediment and arch designs on either side, with funeral Urns atop each column. Printed by R. Aitken and noted for its American historic importance being listed in the "Threads of History" reference book by the Smithsonian. An exceedingly rare, example missing in virtually every private collection, institution and museum. One of the very earliest of all American printed historic textiles.
