Description: European, untitled watercolor of a Romanesque church, signed and dated "J. Haykar 1853". A finely painted watercolor depicting a Romanesque church most likely built sometime between the 6th and late 10th century CE. The sacred building presents a façade that boasts telltale characteristics of this historic architectural style, particularly its rounded Roman arches. Interestingly, however, the alternating red and white voissours of the arches (made famous by the Cathedral/Mosque of Cordoba) were originally inspired by those of the Dome of the Rock. This watercolor was probably painted for those enjoying the Grand Tour, a traditional trip through Europe regarded as an educational rite of passage by upper-class Europeans and Americans. Note the watercolor is signed and dated in the lower right corner "J. Haykar, 1853." Size: 13.75" L x 11" H (34.9 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA.
