February 1, 1866-Dated Civil War Era, Manuscript Document Signed, 3 pages, 8" x 12.5", Choice Extremely Fine.
Unusual content manuscript contract signed shortly after the end of the Civil War. Contract is between W. J. McCalley & J.R. Wyly and James Shanklin, in which Shanklin agrees to labor for MCalley & Wyly on a plantation near Huntsville, Alabama. A 5-cent George Washington stamp is adhered to the top of the first page, and another 2-cent Washington Stamp is attached at the bottom of page 3, below the signed notice of receipt. Docket on verso. Expected folds and light age toning, primarly on the back of page 4, which was the exterior of the folded document. A interesting look at a contract between a recently Freed Slave and his employers in the South.
