Native American, Iroquois, Mohawk, Turtle clan, ca. mid 20th century CE. A pair of Iroquois false face hand-painted and carved wooden spoon mouth masks, the larger with a tag indicating that it was created by "Walter" from the Mohawk band and the Turtle clan, depicting a red face with incised details and long, black hair attached via a hide ornament at the top of the head, the smaller depicting a black face with lively incised and painted details and a small animal hide central attachment. Such false face masks are traditional among the Iroquois, carved in response to dreams and nightmares. These masks are intended to be portraits of several types of mythical beings whom the old Iroquois believe inhabited the rocky regions at the rim of the earth or wandered about in the forests not too long ago.
