Details: This lot comprises twenty-five (25) partially bound hand colored engravings of British orchids by James Sowerby. These attractive plates, measuring approx. 6"x8" overall, bear dates between 1791 and 1836.

James Sowerby was an English naturalist and illustrator. Contributions to published works, such as A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland or English Botany, include his detailed and appealing plates. The use of vivid colour and accessible texts were intended to reach a widening audience in works of natural history.

Condition / Notes: These plates show mild to moderate signs of age and wear, including some foxing, creasing, and marginal losses and pencil notes.
