Description:
Title: Turkistan: Notes of a Journey in Russian Turkistan, Khokand, Bukhara, and Kuldja
Author: Eugene Schuyler - Eugene Schuyler (Ithaca, New York, February 26, 1840 – Venice, Italy, July 16, 1890) was a nineteenth-century American scholar, writer, explorer and diplomat. Schuyler was one of the first three Americans to earn a Ph.D. from an American university; and the first American translator of Ivan Turgenev and Lev Tolstoi. He was the first American diplomat to visit Russian Central Asia, and as American Consul General in Constantinople he played a key role in publicizing Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria in 1876 during the April Uprising. He was the first American Minister to Romania and Serbia, and U.S. Minister to Greece. [Courtesy Wikipedia]

Book Details: From the preface:

I have attempted in this book to give my impression of what I myself saw, and of what I learned from my intercourse both with Russians and natives . . . I hope, then, that my readers will believe that the criticisms made upon certain acts of the Russian administration in Central Asia are not made in a spirit of fault-finding. It is evidently for the interest of Russia that the mistakes and faults of the Russian policy should be known, and should be remedied as soon as possible.
Condition / Notes: This is the first edition of this set. The antique volumes are bound in cloth covers showing stamped black and gilt lettering/ornamentation on the spines and front covers. The first volume is in red cloth while the second is in green. The books show moderate rubbing and toning concentrated at the extremities. The first volume has a cracked rear hinge; the second volume is solidly bound. The books have solid text blocks.

Each volume contains a tissue-guarded frontispiece depicting an ethnic group from the regions discussed. The pages show mild age toning with occasional light marginal smudging/foxing. The books are profusely illustrated with engraved plates, textual illustrations, and chromolithograph fold-out maps.
