Book Details: This is an English translation of the Icelandic Njal Saga, which was written down in its present form by the year 1200 AD. The first 200+ pages provide a historical background and description of the culture, government, religion, customs, etc. of the Icelandic Northmen (volume I). The remainder of the work contains the Saga, which was an oral tradition of even remoter antiquity.
Condition / Notes: This antique set is bound in quarter-leather with brown cloth covers and stmaped gilt lettering/ruling along with raised bands on the spines. There is moderate external rubbing and wear, concentrated at the edges. The binding is solid. There are library pockets and bookplates on the pastedowns. The pages show mild age toning and scattered foxing/tide marking.
