Book Details: From the preface: "[This volume] is a general history in which the animals are described according to their geographical distribution . . . [These volumes] deal with animal life of every kind, vertebrate and invertebrate, in all aspects throughout the world; and, of necessity, prominence is given to those groups which are of most importance in denoting the changes in the lands and seas during comparatively recent geological epochs."
Condition / Notes: This antique set is the first edition of this work. The three volumes are bound in navy cloth, with gilt lettering and pictorial designs to the front covers and spines. The volumes display minimal external wear, with mild fraying to the spine extremities, light rubbing to covers, and a few small scattered spots of soiling. The front hinges of Volumes I and II are cracked, and both hinges of Volume III are cracked. Mild foxing is visible to the outer edges of the text blocks, and each volume's text block is cracked. A previous owner's signature is present to the front paste-down of Volume I. Scattered foxing appears in the interior of these volumes, but the pages are otherwise clean and bright. This set is lavishly illustrated with depictions of animals from all over the world, with 120 color plates, as well as copious textual illustrations. The third volume contains an index.
