Description: Four items of Antique 19th c. English Tunbridge Ware. Including a early Tunbridge Page turner c. 1810, 9 1/2" long. Also 3 Boxes, also 19th c. with the largest at 2.75"x2.75". Weight on all is 4 ozs. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Tunbridge ware is a form of decoratively inlaid woodwork, typically in the form of boxes, that is characteristic of Tonbridge and the spa town of Tunbridge Wells in Kent in the 18th and 19th centuries. The decoration typically consists of a mosaic of many very small pieces of different coloured woods. Shaped rods and slivers of wood were first carefully glued together, then cut into many thin slices of identical veneer with a fine saw.
