Description: Group of four mid to late 19th century memorial brooches. All are 19th c. 1- Large domed brooch currently with a small photograph of a young girl and boy, crack to glass 2"x1.50". 2- Civil War Era daguerreotype of a handsome young man under beveled glass, with glass in the back to hold a lock of hair, 1.50"x1.25". 3- Brooch with photograph of a dapper man with a handlebar mustache, missing pin, 1.25"x1.25". 4- Square braided hair mourning brooch under beveled glass, glass cracked 1.20"x1"T. These would be wonderful additions to any Memento Mori collection. Weight 1.2 oz. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. Hair and mourning jewelry was the height of the romanticism and sentiment that characterized the Victorian era. Many pieces were done as mourning pieces or "memento mori" ("remember you must die").
