29 October 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
Description: One of only 40 produced, these banners were used at the Hilton Las Vegas shows in 1972 and can be seen in images of the press conference at the Hilton Hotel on September 4, 1972, promoting the "Aloha from Hawaii: Via Satellite" televised event scheduled for January 14, 1973. The offered banner, the very last manufacturer's copy, presents a dazzling "ELVIS" formed of red Mylar polka dots on white letters over a bright blue background, all printed on silver Mylar. Flanking "ELVIS" on both sides is "In Person" and the Hilton logo. "Hear Elvis on RCA Records and Tapes" is stated smaller below. The Mylar banner was made by Flashbacks, Inc., Fountain Valley, Calif. as stated in the lower right.
When Flashbacks, a California firm specializing in the highly reflective Mylar material, pitched the Colonel on its visual impact and cost effectiveness, he was immediately sold on the flashy punch the material provided and began using it as signage for Elvis' Las Vegas performances. It was the perfect material for the glitter of Las Vegas and the shimmer of his star. Also offered with the banner is original marketing material listing major companies using Mylar, including among others, Disney, Universal Studios, Major League Baseball and Elvis. Elvis is seen sitting in front of this stylish banner in the reference images (not included with the lot). This very last manufacturer's copy of the banner measures 21 by 90 inches (53.34 x 228.6 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
