Description: dating: late 19th Century
provenance: China
The convex sides are painted in blue on a yellow ground, in the style of Ming of 15th Century, with eight petals containing the bajixiang released from a small band of other petals, surrounding a central protuberance decorated with a flower; the sides are covered with lingzhi mushrooms; foot and neck en suite; the two handles are moulded as symmetrical, curved leaves; on the yellow base is painted in blue the apocryphal, six-character seal mark of the Emperor Yongzheng. A firing defect at the central protuberance and a small chip on the foot. A similar, smaller white and blue moon flask bajixiang, presumably of the same period, marked Qianlong was sold at at Bonhams, Auction 20024: FINE CHINESE ART, 08 November 2012, LONDRA, NEW BOND STREET; lot. 56.
The bajixiang are the eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune.
This moon flask recalls the samples in Ming style manufactured in the 18th Century, during Yongzheng and Qianlong Kingdoms.
