More About this Item

Description: Bowl with tall, slightly domed upper section, two repousséd ridges (double comb) extending from front to back for the attachment of a crest and two hemispherical, hollow bosses riveted to both sides. Formerly fixed to the apex two solid rectangular crest holders, of which only one is existent today. The entire surface of the bowl is covered with punch marks (dot in square), which are only loosely and not systematically arranged in lines along the helmet's contours. Under the upper section of the bowl a distinctly offset, wide rim with an inward slope flaring towards the lower edge. The edge is turned over (approximately 1.8 cm) for reinforcement. On either side within the hollow of the offset a centrally arranged rivet with robust spherical head, which was used to fasten a band of organic material which was wrapped around the perimeter to secure the crest. This helmet is characterised by a mix of traits frequently found in conventional helmet types and several unusual features, for example the combination of offset rim, bosses and ridges, the latter rather belonging to the younger and the first to the older helmet types of this group. Also unusual is the arrangement of the ball-headed rivets on the sides and not in extension of the two ridges, further the reinforced edge and the punch marks in the upper section. All in all it appears that the helmet at hand was made during the 6th century in the ancient Italic region of Picenum, as the typical features of the Northern Italic and Alpine helmet types are missing. Cracks in the upper section of the bowl. Green patina. Apart from minor losses along the cracks predominantly preserved original substance with no replacements. Height 20.5 cm, width 31 cm, length 33.2 cm. From private French property, taken over from the father's collection. Purchased by the latter in 1978.
