More About this Item

Description: Sabre for infantry officers ca. 1816 in deluxe issue. Elegant curved single-edged blade fullered on both sides with pandour point, each side etched, gilt and blued. The gilt Saxon royal coat of arms rests between a finely etched decor of tendrils and trophies on both sides, the back of the blade with maker engraving "E. L. Voigt Haupt Zeughaus Schwerdfeger in Dresden". Fire gilt non-ferrous metal bow guard in fine relief with lion head pommel, both sides of the knuckle bow with the crowned Saxon coat of arms. On the quillon the dedication "Dankbarkeit und Liebe / des Schützen und Jägercorps" (tr. "Gratitude and Affection/of the Rifle and Marksman Corps"), the languet with the wearer's initials "H. R". Obverse of quillon as well as on pommel with a total of three inset, cut red and blue precious stones (synthetic?). The grip with black leathering and intact wire wrap. Scabbard of sheet nickel with typical Saxon ring mountings and decoration (remnants of gilding), two movable carry rings. Slightly damaged in parts, signs of age. Length 99 cm. An unusual and wonderful early sabre of the finest quality. Extremely rare. The 1994 reference book "Trag diese Wehr zu Sachsens Ehr" (1994) shows a comparable standard issue sabre (p. 97, catalogue no. 70) at the Dresden Military History Museum. In 1809 a "Schützen- und Jägerkorps" was formed to secure the border with Bohemia. In 1813 it was expanded to a full Jägerbataillon (Light Infantry Battalion) of four companies. In 1815 the unit had a strength of 14 officers and 588 riflemen. Also in 1809, two "Schützen" battalions were raised each with three officers and 120 men. When the Saxon army was reorganized in 1810, two regiments of "light infantry" were formed from these battalions which together with the "Jägerkorps" formed a "light" Brigade. From 1819 both Schützen battalions were amalgamated with the Jäger battalion into a light infantry half-brigade.
