Description: Both sides of the heavy iron prod with finely etched décor, a smith's mark struck on the inside. Retained by cords with an interlaced iron suspension ring, old braided hemp bowstring. The bellied tiller made of walnut, lavishly veneered with engraved bone inlays. Rich ornamentation of scrollwork and fruit festoons, depictions of various mythical creatures on the sides. A female allegorical figure and two mascarons on the underside. The front half of the quarrel groove has been replaced. The iron nut of later date, repairs in places and small replacements in the lock shaft, one bone inlay missing on the left-hand side. The lock mechanism not functional. Set trigger, fine etchings on the trigger plate. Etched and gilt trigger guard. The bone pommel cap engraved with the monogram "IDVC". Length 58 cm. Significant Renaissance crossbow, which can easily be improved by proper restoration. Collection from the Royal House of Hanover, Sotheby's auction, Schloss Marienburg October 2005, lot 707.
