More About this Item

Description: Hollow, hand-crafted sculpture of ochre-coloured clay with distinct remnants of paintwork, among others, in red, blue and black. Young woman on a square base, clad in a finely pleated, light-blue chiton as undergarment, the pleats indicated by curved incised lines on the upper side. On top, a red himation with wavy border is draped from the left shoulder in rich folds, leaving the right shoulder bare. The minimally staggered feet and a slight, almost unnoticeable sway of the hip somewhat mitigate the austerity of the frontal posture. The lower arms – the right one bent, the left one pointing downwards – broken off. Finely sculpted face with archaic smile, whose impression is intensified by the preserved colouring with red lips, dark pupils, lid edges and eyebrows. The long, curly hair is held on the forehead by a diadem and parted in the middle, cascading down her sides in waves. At the front, long, curly strands of hair fall over her shoulders down to her chest, at the back her hair almost reaches her hips. A firing hole in the middle of the back. Glued together from several large fragments. Apart from the broken-off lower arms completely preserved with only minimal, insignificant flaws. Minor replacements at the base and garments. Height 64 cm, width 22 cm. Unusually large, superbly modelled clay sculpture of a Late Archaic kore with extraordinary charm. An expert restoration of the glued and replaced parts would further increase the impressive effect of the sculpture. From the estate of a Viennese professor. Consigned by the executor of his estate. Comes with old photographs of the object, mounted on typing paper with photo corners. Further, an undated, typewritten description and interpretation of the object, also with photograph of the kore mounted with photo corners. The latter may be dated back to the 70s and early 80s due to traces of age and style.
