His first managerial successes were at Northampton Town between 1908 and 1912 whom he led to a Southern League Championship title. This attracted the attention of the bigger Football League clubs and he moved to Leeds City. After the end of the First World War the club was embroiled in an illegal payments scandal and eventually disbanded. Chapman successfully overturned a ban on appeal and went on to achieve major successes firstly at Huddersfield Town and latterly at Arsenal.
