Lot 2499: A Roman furniture mount with Lar, 2nd - 3rd century
26 October 2016
Munich, Bavaria, GermanyLive Auction
Description: Bronze statuette of a Lar in a knee-length garment, his arms bent and closed to form a circle, holding objects originally inserted in the centre. Long hair falling down to his shoulders, held by a cloth band, under which neat curls appear on the forehead and sides. The feet clad in elaborately laced boots, the left foot broken off. On the reverse a rod covered with acanthus leaves emerges from the middle of the shoulder, terminating in a curved disk with a rectangular loop that served as a mortise for attachment to another element. The latter detail indicates that the object was used as part of a piece of furniture, for example, as a cabinet foot. Green patina with red oxides and incrustations. Height 30.7 cm. Sculpture of high artistic quality. From private ownership in Vienna, acquired in 1998 from another private Viennese collection of the 1970s and 90s.
