More About this Item

Description: White porcelain, on the bottom the hand-painted blue underglaze sceptre mark in the form used between 1772 and 1800. Depiction of a bearded Russian with fur-trimmed cap, holding a turban with plumage in his right hand. On the right of the base a firing crack. Height 29.5 cm. On the occasion of the defensive alliance with Russia concluded by the Prussian King Frederick II after the Peace of Hubertusburg, precious gifts were exchanged to cement the friendly ties. To that effect, a multi-part dessert service with a figurative table centrepiece was commissioned, which was manufactured between 1770 and 1772 by the KPM master sculptor Friedrich Elias Meyer. The table centrepiece comprised twelve male folk figures, of which the present figure "Russian peasant" is marked with model number "497". The finished service was publicly exhibited in Berlin as a masterpiece of porcelain art for 14 days in April 1772. Today, it is part of the collection of the St. Petersburg Hermitage. Of greatest rarity. Apart from the presentation service bestowed upon Catherine the Great, no further items from the 18th century are known to exist. It was not until the late 19th century that figures from this group were manufactured again in small numbers. Cf. Lenz, Georg, "Berliner Porzellan von 1763 - 1786", volume 2, Berlin 1913. From the estate of the Counts of Asseburg.
