More About this Item

Description: A Candid Photograph of Richard Nixon ********** NIXON, RICHARD M. (1913 1994). Thirty-seventh president of the United States whose political career was ended by the Watergate scandal. SP. (“Dick Nixon”). 1p. 4to. N.p., N.d. Inscribed in black ink to “My good friend” United Press International photographer Ed Alley “with best wishes.” A black-and-white photograph depicting Nixon with Alley, who is smiling and wearing several cameras, and a third, unidentified man. The photo has been signed by Associated Press photographer Henry L. Griffin. ********** Alley was covering Nixon as early as 1961, when he photographed his wife Pat and daughter Julie cleaning out Nixon’s office after his presidential election defeat by JFK. “Photographer Ed Alley of UPI surveyed the scene with a twinge of nostalgia. ‘We’ll miss you around here,’ he said. Julie smiled. And she said, ‘We’re all going to miss you, too,’” (“Assignment: Washington,” Reading Eagle, Koterba). Nixon returned to Washington where Alley had ample opportunity to cover him, beginning with his 1968 victory, one of the largest landslides in U.S. electoral history. Only a few months after his election to a second term, Nixon became embroiled in the Watergate break-in, probably the most famous political scandal in American history. The break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters linked to Nixon’s re-election campaign combined with conversations Nixon had secretly taped proved his and his staff’s involvement in a cover-up. Rather than face impeachment, he resigned from the nation’s highest office on August 9, 1974. Interestingly, Nixon is the only president ever to resign. ********** Very fine.
