dating: Daoguang (1821-1850)
Painted in polychromy with the twelve, Chinese zodiac signs; the dragon appears from the clouds and the other eleven animals are on the ground; at the center of the thin, round foot is the iron-red, four-character seal mark of the Emperor Daoguang; the nephrite cover, shaped as a half-sphere, ends in a thin, ivory spoon. The enamel is slightly consumed from the use. A snuff bottle of the same shape and presumably of the same period, with the apocryphal, iron-red, four-character mark of the Emperor Chengua was sold at Sotheby's, auction HK0524, Snuff Bottles from the Mary & George Bloch Collection: Part IX; 24 November 2014, HONG KONG; lot. 190.
The snuff bottle features the twelve Chinese zodiac signs: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
dimensions: height 5.5 cm.
