Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 43 3/8 x 58 1/2 in./110.2 x 148.6 cm Imp. P. Vercasson, Paris "Absinthe was invented in Switzerland in 1797 as a curative potion, an alcoholic punch flavored with wormwood, a common herb whose root yielded a bitter but highly intoxicating essence. It was eventually established that wormwood ... was a potent hallucinogen with far too many unpleasant and dangerous side effects, and its widespread distillation was eventually prohibited during World War I. In its heyday, however, it enjoyed enormous popularity among the serious drinking segment of the public ... [Here] The gentleman waits with a smirk for his comely companion's reaction to her first sip of J.
