Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862-1918)
One of the leading members of the Vienna Secession movement, Gustav Klimt was born to an artistic family in Baumgarten, Austria-Hungary. Revering history painter Hans Makart, Klimt studied architectural painting at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1876 to 1883. After, he became a mural and interior painter with a successful series of commissions for institutions like the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria awarded him the Golden Order of Merit in 1888, and he became an honorary member of universities in Munich and Vienna. Klimt was a part of the Vienna Secession from 1897 to 1904, during which he painted the renowned Beethoven Frieze for the group’s fourteenth exhibition and contributed to the lavish interior of the Art Nouveau Palais Stocklet. He received the Grand Prix at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris and won first prize at the 1911 International Exhibition of Art in Rome. Known for distinctive motifs like gold leaf, radical eroticism, and decorative patterning, his works are included in the collections of Musée d’Orsay, Museum of Modern Art, Neue Pinakothek, and National Gallery, London.
