I have sought to picture a fleeting phase of our national life; not omitting its grotesque, lawless features; not concealing my admiration for the adventurous pioneers who have founded great States from the Mississippi to the Pacific, and made a new geography for the American Union.
Condition / Notes: This is the scarce first edition of this work. The antique volume is bound in the publisher's blindstamped brown cloth covers with stamped gilt lettering/ornamentation on the front cover and spine. The exterior shows light rubbing and scuffing and chipping to the top/bottom of the spine. The front hinge is starting to crack on the bottom interior. The text block is solid.
The book has brown endpapers and does not include the Publisher's Announcement. A former owner's stamp and signature appear on the front flyleaf and the first blank preliminary. There is a double-page fold-out map prior to the illustrated additional title page. The pages show light age toning and occasional light marginal spotting/smudging. The work is profusely illustrated with plates and textual figures.
