Ens. environ 275 p. in-4 et in-folio (dimensions diverses).
Manuscrit autographe corrigé des mémoires d'Alfred de Vigny relatifs à son élection à l'Académie française le 8 mai 1845, après cinq échecs, et aux incidents qui émaillèrent sa réception le 29 janvier de l'année suivante. Dans ce long texte, dont l'essentiel semble avoir été écrit peu de temps après les faits, Vigny justifie notamment son inflexibilité après la trahison du comte Molé et son refus d'être présenté au Roi par ce dernier, comme c'était la coutume, puisque celui-ci avait prononcé une réponse insultante au discours de réception du poète. Ces pages ont été éditées en 1958 par Jean Sangnier avec, en appendice, des notes et fragments relatifs à l'Académie, un procès-verbal autographe de la séance du 13 décembre 1849 présidée par Vigny lui-même, ainsi qu'un mémoire sur la "question de la présentation du discours" (1852), le nœud de l'affaire…
On joint à cet ensemble de nombreux fragments et notes qui n'ont pas été retenus lors de la publication des Mémoires inédits, notamment une note rédigé "au retour de la lecture [des discours] à la commission" le 27 janvier 1846, un compte rendu daté du 18 février 1846 et cet autre texte : "Les infamies se multiplient. On s'efforce d'affaiblir mon courage. Au moment où je vais monter en voiture, on m'apporte une lettre anonyme. Selon ma coutume, je porte les yeux sur la signature et n'en voyant pas, je la déchire sans la lire. - Et parfaitement calme, n'éprouvant qu'un mouvement de joie de penser que je vais être délivré dans une heure de tout cet ennui, je pars et laisse madame de Vigny chez elle, en repos et heureuse du calme qu'elle me voit. Égayée par mon uniforme qui lui plaît. - Je la tiens dans un nuage, ne lui confie que ce qui peut lui plaire et la mets à l'abri de tout ce qui afflige. Le combat est pour les hommes seuls. J'y vais. ".
Manques, déchirures et pliures marginaux, certains atteignant le texte. Quelques taches.
