in-12 et in-8 (dimensions diverses), suscriptions et 3 enveloppes.

Correspondance d'Alfred de Vigny à Virginie Chardon (1792-1875) qui épousa en 1817 le dramaturge et futur académicien Jacques Ancelot. Si elle s'était fait d'abord connaître comme peintre - elle exposa régulièrement au Salon entre 1814 et 1819 - c'est surtout en tant que femme du monde qu'elle donna toute la mesure de sa personnalité hors-norme : "Dans son salon,, dont le recrutement en soixante ans allait évoluer avec un grand pragmatisme, Virginie Ancelot sut recevoir un monde nombreux, aussi influent que mêlé : elle associa toujours artistes, hommes politiques, français et exilés, hommes de lettres, journalistes et gens à la mode, n'hésitant pas à mêler les partis et les générations, conviant académiciens et débutants. Parmi de nombreux autres, Guizot, Tocqueville, Delacroix, Brifaut, Custine, Ballanche, Mérimée, Stendhal, Musset et surtout Vigny, qui fut un de ses grands fidèles, fréquentèrent sa maison" (Alfred de Vigny, Correspondance, V, p. 596). Femme de lettres, elle écrivit sous la monarchie de Juillet plusieurs pièces et romans à succès, et se fit mémorialiste pour immortaliser l'un des derniers salons littéraires parisiens, qu'elle avait aussi peint à diverses époques.
Les lettres présentées ici sont parmi les très rares d'Alfred de Vigny à Virginie Ancelot à avoir été conservées ; la plupart évoquent la fille de Virginie Ancelot, Louise, dont on attribue la paternité à Alfred de Vigny mais sans preuve formelle, et
les enfants de celle-ci et de l'avocat Charles Lachaud, Georges, le filleul du poète, et Thérèse. "Ne vous figurez pas, [Mada]me, que je sois dans un pays [chaud ?] parce qu'il y a le nom de Pau en [haut] de ma lettre. Je suis bien convaincu à présent que je m'étais trompé en croyant le pays au midi, il est fort au nord de Paris, car à mesure que j'approchais des Pyrénées, j'ai trouvé du froid, ici de la pluie et un peu plus loin de la neige ; si bien que je vous écris à l'heure qu'il est les pieds dans le feu. " (20 juin 1824 ; la lettre présente un important manque central touchant plusieurs lignes) ; "Il y a des salons qui nous enveloppent de tous les petits liens de Guliver [sic] sans qu'on s'en puisse détacher quelque secret reproche que l'on se fasse. Aujourd'hui dans le silence des bois et des prairies, du fond d'une grande tour où j'écris beaucoup, j'envoie tous les sentimens que vous connaissez si bien, à vous d'abord puis à la sœur Ange Louise qui est sans doute près de vous. " (12 décembre 1850) ; "Vous avez fait pénétrer dans ma demeure, soirée par soirée, une douce lecture qui a duré trop peu de temps mais qui a charmé des heures fort attristées et que je travaille sans cesse à rendre plus légères. Je vous remercie, mon amie, de m'y avoir aidé. Vous étiez médecin sans le savoir. - Le feuilleton tant combattu a un avantage sur le livre, c'est que personne ne peut courir au dénouement par curiosité, on ne voit chaque scène qu'à son tour, comme au théâtre" (2 janvier 1853, à propos de Renée de Varville, roman de Virginie Ancelot paru en feuilletons dans le Constitutionnel à la fin de l'année 1852).

Virginie ANCELOT (1792-1875). Lettre autographe signée à Alfred de Vigny. [Paris, entre le 5 et le 9 avril 1846]. Une page in-12. "Il y a une personne, une dame de ma connaissance qui va faire un journal pour les jeunes personne. Elle voudrait y citer un fragment de vous et me charge de vous envoyer cette lettre pour vous en demander la permission. Soyez assez bon pour lui faire cette faveur". C'est la seule lettre de Virginie Ancelot à Alfred de Vigny conservée dans les archives du poète, les autres ayant été détruites.
