Très important ensemble de lettres, notes et documents divers relatifs
à la succession de Hugh Mills Bunbury, beau-père d'Alfred de Vigny.
Né en 1763 à Exeter (Devonshire), dans une famille distinguée, Hugh Mills Bunbury devint fonctionnaire du gouvernement britannique sur l'île de Saint-Vincent (Petites Antilles) vers l'âge de 25 ans et y épousa en 1791 Lydia-Prisca Cox. Celle-ci donna naissance en 1794 (?) à Lydia, future comtesse de Vigny, et, en 1799, à Hugh Mills junior, quelques mois avant de mourir des suites de ce second accouchement. Entre temps, le couple avait acquis dans la région de Demerara une plantation baptisée "Devonshire Castle". Hugh Mills Bunbury, ayant édifié une solide fortune, rentra en Europe vers 1812 et voyagea à travers le Vieux Continent avec ses deux enfants. Il se remaria en 1822 avec Alicia Lillie qui lui donna huit enfants.
On sait les doutes qu'entretenait la mère d'Alfred de Vigny sur la dot et les "espérances" de sa future bru au moment de donner son consentement au mariage de son fils. Or ceux-ci se révélèrent en grande partie fondés puisque, quelques années plus tard, Hugh Mills Bunbury, mort le 2 novembre 1838, rédigea un testament en faveur des enfants nés de son second mariage. Le règlement de sa succession - qui justifia notamment le voyage des Vigny en Angleterre de la fin novembre 1838 à la fin avril 1839 - fut éminemment compliqué et donna lieu à de multiples rebondissements et, en particulier, aux interventions contradictoires de la Cour de la Chancellerie à Londres et de la Cour suprême de Guyane. Les enfants des deux lits n'aboutirent à un compromis qu'à la fin de l'année 1843.
L'ensemble des papiers relatifs à cette affaire, soigneusement classés et conservés par les Vigny, comprend, outre des documents officiels, originaux ou copies de l'époque, l'abondante correspondance échangée entre les Vigny, les Bunbury et leurs conseils respectifs, notamment John Innes, Benjamin Martindale et Charles Wilde, ainsi que de multiples notes, brouillons et minutes de la main d'Alfred de Vigny.
