Description: Design by J.F. Eberlein, 1744. White glazed porcelain, rim and canvas with a fine floral decor in relief (Gotzkowsky). At, centre is a hand-painted floral bouquet, the rim with the Russian double eagle under a tsarist crown and Cross of St. Andrew, gilt edge. At the base blue underglazed sword markings and a red Hermitage inventory number. Diameter 24.7 cm. Of outstanding condition and quality. Rare. This plate originates from the St. Andrew service, which was presented by King August III of Saxony to Tsarina Elizabeth I on the occasion of the wedding of her nephew, the Russian heir to the throne Grand Duke Peter Fjodorovich (later Peter III) to Sophie Auguste Friederike of Anhalt-Zerbst (later Catherine the Great). The service consisted of circa 440 pieces, listed on an inventory sheet dated 5 November 1745, and subsequently resided at the imperial residence in St. Petersburg and later at the Hermitage. A large part of the service was sold in 1928 at the Berlin auction house of Rudolf Lepke on behalf of the Soviet government. 145 pieces still reside at the Hermitage. Cf. Rainer Rückert, "Meissener Porzellan 1710 - 1810", catalogue of an "exhibition at the Bavarian National Museum", Munich, 1966, illustration 482.
