Description: Southwestern US, Mogollon, 1100 to 1250 CE. This is a very large black-on-white Kiva jar. Kiva jars differ from seed jars by having drilled holes around the rim, usually four to tie a lid onto. Seed jars do not have these holes present. The exterior is boldly painted with corn kernel designs, fringed blankets and "Whirling Logs". There are numerous ancient bow drilled holes all over the vessel, this was done in ancient times to repair the vessel. Sinew would have been sewn into the holes. When it dried it would seal the cracks. The artists responsible for creating pottery vessels like this were women, and many women have been found in burials accompanied by pottery making tools. Size: 11.5" W x 7.5" H (29.2 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private AZ collection found on private ground and does not violate any UNESCO or NAGPRA regulations

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
