Tout dans cette toile de grand format rappelait furieusement l''école de David mais l''absence de signature en rendait l''attribution à l''un de ses nombreux élèves délicate. Aucun indice ne pouvait enfin nous être apporté par une insaisissable iconographie, manifestement tirée de l''histoire grecque. Une clé nous était tout de même donnée par l''important format de l''œuvre, nous faisant supposer qu''elle avait très certainement été exposée au Salon. La mise en ligne récente par le musée d''Orsay d''une excellente base de données dédiée à ces expositions vint nous aider à repérer ce que nous cherchions. En croisant plusieurs critères d''école et de dates, nous fumes attirés par un titre pour le moins inattendu : "Le divorce", tableau d''Anatole Devosge présenté au Salon de 1801. La description du sujet donnée par le livret vint nous ôter nos derniers doutes; lisons plutôt : "Hipparète, femme vertueuse, et qui aimait éperduement son mari, ne pouvant souffrir le commerce qu''il avait avec toutes les femmes galantes de la ville, quitta sa maison, et se retira chez son frère. Comme il fallait que la femme qui quittait son mari, remît entre les mains de l''archonte la lettre de divorce, et qu''elle la présentât elle-même en personne, Hipparète ayant comparue pour obéir à la loi, Alcibiade s''y trouva ; et la saisissant par le milieu du corps, l''enleva, traversa toute la place, et l''emporta chez lui, où elle demeura jusqu''à sa mort." Tout s''éclairait alors : la mise en scène des personnages sur la place d''Athènes, dont on distingue l''acropole à l''arrière-plan, l''enlèvement de cette jeune femme par un homme piétinant un morceau de parchemin devant un potentat sur un trône et au milieu d''une foule dans laquelle l''on distingue un homme à la longue barbe dont la physionomie rappelle celle de Socrate, également amant du bel Alcibiade. Le peintre a ici décrit avec une grande précision et un sens aigu de la narration cet épisode de la vie d''Alcibiade, tiré de Plutarque. Le dessin préparatoire à notre tableau (fig. 1), dépôt du musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon au musée de Gray, acheva de confirmer notre intuition. Fils du peintre François Devosge, fondateur de l''Académie de peinture et de sculpture de Dijon, Anatole Devosge fit ses débuts à ses côtés avant de venir à Paris en 1788 continuer sa formation au sein de l''atelier de Jacques-Louis David. Il partagea également l''atelier de Pierre-Paul Prud''hon qui avait été l''élève de son père. C''est lui qui réalisa le dessin de Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau sur son lit de mort, seule trace de la célèbre composition de David aujourd''hui disparue. Devosge séjourne à Rome de 1803 à 1806 avant de retourner à Dijon en 1811 à la mort de son père pour lui succéder à la tête de l''Académie. Il fit un legs important au musée des Beaux-Arts de sa ville à sa mort. La redécouverte de l''Alcibiade et Hipparète du Salon de 1801 nous permet de mieux apprécier la production de cet artiste encore méconnu. Cette œuvre monumentale aux figures théâtrales et à la construction irréprochable témoigne l''ancrage de Devosge à la suite de David. La douceur du coloris employé et l''élégance des figures, notamment féminines, aux attitudes mesurées et aux visages délicats, ne sont quant à eux pas indifférents à la fréquentation de Pierre-Paul Prud''hon.
