ARCHAEOLOGY -- (STRATICO, S.). Dell’antico teatro di Padova. Padua, Stamperia del Seminario, 1795. viii, 70, (1) pp. W. 6 lge fold. engr. plates. Sm-fol. Old limp brds. (Slightly foxed in places, else a very fine uncut copy). Simone Stratico (1730 -1824) discovered the remnants of an old Roman theatre during a project to reclaim habitable land from a marshy surface within the town of Padua. After the fall of the Roman empire the theatre had fallen into ruins, being largely demolished during the XVI century in order to gather building materials for the church of Santa Giustina and the Rialto Bridge in Venice. The outcome of the project was the Prato Della Valle, one of the largest and nicest piazzas of Europe, surrounded by two circles of statues representing illustre Patavines. - Cicognara, 800.
