More About this Item

Description: Attributed to Hernando de Ávila (c.1538 - 1595) "Saint Peter freed by the angel". From around 1580. Oil on board. In her study of this panel painting, Isabel Mateo suggests that it could have formed part of the lost altarpiece from Saint Peter´s church in Santa Olalla, Toledo, which was commissioned by Hernando de Ávila and Diego de Velasco de Ávila in 1574. In the words of Isabel Mateo, this panel "is an exquisite composition of colour and technique. Although it lacks originality as it is based on an engraving by the Flemish Sadeler, Hernando de Ávila (to whom we attribute the painting) knew how to enrich it with his minute brush-strokes and his mastery in the way he achieves the transparency in the varied ranges of colour. Hernando de Ávila was a renaissance painter and illuminator. He worked at El Escorial for Philip II and was senior master at Toledo Cathedral from 1565. Among other projects, he painted the altarpiece at the Hermitage of Saint Eugene in Toledo and produced the "Book of portraits, signs and royal insignias of the Monarchs of Oviedo, Leon and Castile" which comprises 77 folios and is kept in the Prado. Isabel Mateo Gómez´s study is included in the lot. 115 x 66 cm.
