Description: Attributed to the Roland de Moys workshop (1515-1592) "The adoration of the Kings". Circa 1580 - 1590
Oil on board. Almost certainly painted in Saragossa, where Roland de Moys had his workshop between 1571 and 1592. Our panel is a reproduction of the Epiphany from the main altarpiece at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Olive, Navarra, commissioned by Martín de Gurrea y Aragón, IV Duke of Villahermosa, of the painters Paulo Scheppers and Roland de Moys. Later, Moys painted two replicas of the same Epiphany, one for the main altarpiece at the Fitero monastrey in Navarra (1590-1591) and the second for the funerial chapel in the Church of Saint Domingo in Saragossa. The panel which we have here can be added to these three and, as Dr. Mainar and Dr. Morejón note, "..can be considered to be the most faithful replica of the prototype. We think that this exquisite faithfulness to the original composition, as well as the line used, confirm that the painting can be undoubtedly ascribed to the Moys workshop." Measurements: 167 x 112 cm. The lot includes the report written by Dr. Jesús Criado Mainar and Dr. José Alipio Morejón who we would like to thank for their invaluable help in cataloguing this painting.
