Description: Roseate Spoonbill, Plate 321. John James Audubon (1785 - 1851). First Edition Robert Havell Aquatint Engravings with Original Hand Color From Birds of America Double Elephant Folio. London: Robert Havell, 1827-1838. Excellent Condition. 26 1/2 x 39 1/2 inches sheet, 37 1/4 x 49 1/2 inches framed. Guidance: Mid-Hudson, April 2, 2016 - $152,500. Christie's, June 25, 2004 - $175,500. With rosy pink wings, an orange tail, and a naked, blotchy, scaly grayish-green head, the Roseate Spoonbill is at once beautiful and bizarre. ?When I sold this image to Lauren Bacall, 35 years ago, she called it ?marvelous? as she directed I hang it for her over a portrait of Humphrey Bogart in her apartment at the Dakota.? - Graham Arader.
