More About this Item

Description: Uncommon Letter by Author Robert Lowry: “I’m looking down that long road of a new novel with no end in sight yet” ********** LOWRY, ROBERT. (1919-1994). Critically-acclaimed American writer and publisher whose works were admired by Ernest Hemingway. TLS. (“Robert Lowry”). ¼p. 4to. Redding, June 11, 1951. To Mr. Seward. ********** “The enclosed print will probably take up one solid wall of your office, but it’s the smallest I have and I hope it’ll do. Nice to know that somebody not only has read the books, but has re-read them. Your saying so in a letter means a lot to me... especially right now when I’m looking down that long road of a new novel with no end in sight yet.” ********** Lowry began publishing stories at the age of nine and became a rising literary star in the 1940s, writing on such subjects as his experiences during World War II and the Bohemian scene in New York’s Greenwich Village. Over the next several decades he penned such works as The Big Cage; Casualty; Find Me in Fire; The Violent Wedding; The Wolf That Fed Us; Happy New Year, Kamerades!; and Party of Dreamers. His short fiction was published in New Directions, Collier’s, Mademoiselle, and The American Mercury. He also founded the Little Man Press, which published the works of William Saroyan and Thomas Mann, among others. The later part of his writing career was affected by schizophrenia, for which he was frequently hospitalized. The unpredictability of his behavior as well as his controversial friendship with American Nazi Party leader George Lincoln Rockwell led to his descent into obscurity. ********** Typed on a blank sheet which has been folded. Some separation along the folds and other minor tears, not affecting the text. Overall in fine condition and rare.
