Two centuries of Italian Masterpieces'', cat. exp., Budapest, Szépmuvészeti muzeum, 2009, p. 146, mentionné dans la notice du n° 56 Commentaire : A la fois architecte et peintre, Bartolomeo Suardi doit son surnom de Bramantino à son activité auprès de Bramante sur différents chantiers de Rome entre 1508 et 1512. Il avait auparavant apprit la peinture auprès de Bernardino Butinone, ce qui le prépara à sa nomination de peintre de cour à Milan auprès de François II Sforza en 1525. Dès lors son atelier fut fréquenté par de nombreux élèves parmi lesquelles Gaudenzio Ferrari et Bernardino Luini. De cet atelier émergea une génération d''artistes qui seront parmi les meilleurs représentants de la peinture lombarde du XVIe siècle. L''architecture tient une place importante dans les compositions de Bramantino qui, parfaitement construites, lui permettent de laisser libre cours à son imagination de bâtisseur. Notre tableau est une reprise autographe, probablement avec la participation de collaborateurs, de la célèbre Lamentation sur le Christ mort, peinte vers 1510/15, et actuellement conservée à Milan (1). Datant notre tableau vers 1515, Pietro Marani le publie dans un article de 1997 en le nommant " A Newly-discovered version of Bramantino''s Pietà " et en mettant la toile en rapport avec la Cène de Léonard de Vinci. Pietro Marani insiste sur l''importance de l''architecture et compare les projections architecturales de Bramantino à certains dessins de Léonard que nous retrouvons dans le Codex Atlanticus. Dans la première version du Castello Sforzesco comme dans notre toile, les formes sont réduites à l''essentiel et l''effet compte plus que la lecture en détail de chaque élément, la palette est réduite afin d''augmenter l''efficacité de la vision de l''œuvre. Plusieurs repentirs sont visibles dans notre tableau, celui qui entoure une partie de la tête du Christ est plus visible que les autres grâce au fond blanc immaculé du linceul. La grande rotonde dans le fond du tableau est absolument fascinante. Elle illustre les recherches les plus récentes en ce début de XVIe siècle et les ambitions d''architectures classiques démesurées qui animait alors les architectes. Faut-il y voir le support d''une coupole non commencée ? Les personnages dont les profils animent si élégamment le sommet de cette colonnade sont-ils des ouvriers ? Bramantino semble avoir particulièrement travaillé sur l''architecture de ce temple que l''on retrouve, en radiographie, dans le fond de la célèbre Crucifixion de la Brera (2), peinte dans le même temps, vers 1520. 1.
