Chicago, IL, USALive Auction
Description: Antler handle with period sheath. Double stamped Michael Price knives are few and far between. This one has beautiful stag scales pinned in three places to tang. The blade is 8 3/8" long, with knife being 13 1/5" overall in length. Feels good in the hand, sheath with copper mounting at tip and cross hatched design. This sheath originally came with the knife and appears to be original to knife, (fits perfect). It sports what looks to be a brass covered tin mount on the tip of the sheath. This cataloger only knows of 1 M Price Bowie Knife that is double stamped, (this one). The sheath is original or period to the knife and stamped with likely the owner’s name. It reads on backside of the sheath in extremely small lettering “MEL SCHULTZ IDAHO C _ _ _ (unlegible) IDAHO”. It is assumed that the C _ _ was or stood for COUNTY. “Idaho County Idaho was established before the territory of Idaho in 1862. It wan’t until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the act that formed the organization of the Territory of Idaho. The area that comprised Idaho county was part of the Oregon Territory from 1848 to 1859. The first settlements in Idaho County were by gold seekers in 1861.” Gold seekers followed the Nez Perce trail into Elk City Basin, hopeful of finding gravel deposits that would contain gold. Their hopes were realized! A new gold rush was on. (From the official Idaho County website and Pioneer Days of Idaho County Volume one, quoting Idaho County, Records of the District Court, Book 1 (1862 – 1864)).” The research on Mel Schultz has not been completed, so who was he? Overall a very large Bowie for a Micheal Price, it feels great in the hand and has awesome stag scales on the tapered tang held by three peened iron rivets. It sports an oval crossgaurd. A fantastic Bowie for any collector of knives, gold history or related.
