Breitling

The Swiss manufacturer of luxury watches was originally founded by Léon Breitling (1860-1914) in 1884. When Gaston Breitling followed in his father’s footsteps in 1914, the development of the chronograph became a focal point for Breitling. The Swiss company sets the standard for independent chronograph pushers to this day. Breitling supplies the Royal Air Force with time keeping equipment since 1936. The Breitling Chronomat was so popular among the American troops that it eventually implemented in the US Army Air Force. The Navitimer, which is also offered with an automatic winding since 1969, was a great success. When the family company had to close down in 1979, Willy Breitling sold the rights to the name and brand to the pilot and entrepreneur Ernest Schneider. In 1984 Breitling released the new Chronomat, which is still very successful today. In 1995 Breitling set a milestone in pilot watch history with the Emergency. The development of a mechanical diver’s watch that is waterproof down to 3000 metres, too, was an horological masterpiece. Since 1999 all mechanical movements of the Breitling company are certified COSC. (ala)
