The British fashion company was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry when he opened his first textile business in Basingstoke (Hampshire). In 1880 he invented the gabardine fabric, which he had patented in 1888 and with which entered the international wholesale trade a few years later. The first shop in London was opened in 1891, in 1910 a store in Paris followed and from 1915 onwards products were shipped to Japan. Over time, Thomas Burberry's two sons Thomas Newman and Arthur Michael Burberry had taken the company’s lead. From 1924 onwards the famous check patterns Burberry check, Haymarket check, Nova check and House check were patented. Besides being appointed purveyor to the royal British court in 1955, Burberry also soon attracted the attention of Hollywood stars: actors such as Audrey Hepburn and Peter Sells wore the famous Burberry trench coats for the productions Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Pink Panther. Through a brand relaunch in the early 2000s, the company managed to re-establish itself again in the luxury segment, after having had some years of financial difficulties. The designer Christopher Bailey has been with the company since 2001, he reinterpreted the classic Burberry patterns in a new and original way and brought the company new success. He was appointed Chief Creative Officer in 2009 and eventually became Burberry’s CEO in 2014.
