Description: Rare Clews Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York Plate. Decoration: Reads "Landing of Gen. La Fayette at Castle Garden, New York 16th August 1824". with a central image of a group of ships and small boats outside the fort. The lower portion shows a six cannon salute to General Lafayette as he visits on his return tour of America. A floral border surrounds the central image. Reverse is imprinted with a crown surrounded by CLEWS Warranted Staffordshire. A rare plate, made by James and Ralph Clews of Cobridge, Staffordshire in the early 1800s. This firm ran between 1817-1834 and established a thriving export trade in fine blue and white pottery to America. Their American views are particularly popular, the "Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York in 1824" being one of the most sought after by collectors.
