Description: Federal Period
c. 1800 Early Printed "Plan of the City of Washington"
c. 1800 Federal Period, "Plan of the City of Washington," Engraving by Carl Jattnig, Berlin, measuring 9.75" x 8", Choice Very Fine.
This is a simplified version of Andrew Ellicott's plan of 1792. Measures 9.75" x 8" on fine laid paper; map image 8.25" x 6.5". An additional 3.25" wide paper has been mounted to the left end of the map, attached on verso with adhesive, making overall length about 13". The City of Washington is shown bordered by the Potomakc (Potomac) River and the Eastern Branch, now the Anacostia River. Georgetown, at the left and northwest of Rock Creek, is separately labeled. Reedy Branch and Tiber Creek are shown to the north outside of the street pattern. A few major building including the Capitol and Presidents House are labeled; others are merely outlined. The proposed landscape design for the Mall is shown with some detail. In upper right is an eight-pointed compass indicated surmounted by a Fleur de Lis. This is a rare German engraved plan, apparently found only in the "Magazine" edition of Isaac Weld's "Travels." Overall, this plan of Washington being well printed and in nice condition for display. Scarce.
