Dress Swatch and Engraved Portrait of Martha Washington
c. 1906, Framed Dress Swatch and Engraved Portrait of Martha Washington, Framed to Overall Size of 11.25" x 16.25", Very Fine.
Rare framed original Cloth Dress Swatch claimed to be from Martha Washington, together framed with an Engraved Portrait of Martha Washington. An old sticker on the back with number "21" and some tape with the name "Knickerbocker," likely from the Knickerbocker Hotel, built by John Jacob Astor IV in Manhattan, which opened in 1906. The etching is by George W.P. Custis, grandson of Mrs. Washington, and also the father-in-law of Robert E. Lee. An additional label on the back of the frame, located below the paper cover, appears to show the Cloth Swatch is from the Custis estate and had actually belonged to Martha Washington, though this is unconfirmed. The Cloth Swatch appears in fine condition with some light fading and age discoloration. Engraving shows light foxing throughout.
