29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 1845 HAINAUT. PARIS. 5 Actions de F500, titre provisoire. blue. No 7866-70. Folds, some discolouration and one repaired edge-split. Square format piece, in French and English. The line linked up at the frontier with the French Chemin de Fer du Nord, and was part of the important and profitable Paris-Cologne route. However, it took 7 years to build only 26km of line, due to the disturbances of 1848, and general financial problems, partly caused by the fact that the line crossed the river Sambre no less than 15 times! The line, whose concession was granted to an English company, was completed only with loans from the Belgian state and from Rothschild's CdF du Nord. The final cost was an enormous BFr 460.000 per km. However, the line was very profitable, and finally paid good dividends to its investors
