Lot 76: C.E. Barry USS Parrott Archive
22 October 2016
Knoxville , TN, USALive Auction
Description: Archive of material related to the Pre WII circa 1936 service of Charles Edmond Berry (Yeoman 2nd Class, USS Parrott, U.S. Navy). Includes Berry's copy of "In Memory of My China Cruise" or "My Oriental Album" photo album bound in black leather, embossed with Chinese motifs such as a junk ship, a dragon, and the Great Wall of China, and "C. E. BERRY U. S. S. PARROTT" in gold lettering, center bottom of cover. This lot also includes Berry's military dog tag. The majority of the album is filled with travel photos of Asian tourist locations arranged in mounting corners attached to pieces of black card stock separated by multicolored tissue paper. Approximately 47 loose photographs are with the album, including 3 ships party photographs by Ah (or A) Fung a photographer working in Chefoo, China, during the 1930s. Also included are 4 pieces of ephemera related to tourism, primarily in Singapore, such as "The Sailors' Institute Anson Road, Headquarters of the Missions to Seamen Singapore" with information about the institute and suggestions on places to visit, a folded map with business advertisements in the back, a lithographic postcard depicting the Town Hall, and a lithographic advertisement for "Luzon Cafe". Also included are 2 copies of Berry's "Subpoena and Summons Extraordinary - The Royal High Court of the Raging Main" both dated November 23, 1936. Issued on behalf of "Neptunus Rex", represented by the "High Tribunal Court of Neptune" or "The Trusty Shellbacks", Berry, a "vile landlubber and pollywog", is summoned to appear before "this Royal and Our August Presence...to accept...the awful tortures...to become one of our Trusty Shellbacks and be initiated in the mysteries of [Neptune's] Empire". Such summons are issued to "initiate" the sailors who had never crossed the equator, regardless of rank. This ritual, still in practice, is taken seriously, as evidenced by the U.S. Naval Dispatch also included to notify "All Destroyers Persent [sic], Blackhawk" that the initiation would be taking place. Also included is a plastic medallion with a picture of Christ that reads "Jesus Never Fails", and a program for a "Voyage Smoker U. S. S. Henderson" on August 29, 1934 that lists the ship's itinerary for June 27-November 13, 1934. 2 packages of "Nuage Mounting Corners" also included. Housed in a canvas case with 2 snap fasteners. Album - 10 5/8" H x 14 7/8" W x 2" D. Canvas case - 11 1/8" H x 16 1/4" x 2" D. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
