Lot 306: CAMILLE PISSARRO Faneuses d'Éragny.
03 November 2016
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Etching printed in black on greenish gray laid paper, 1897. 201x151 mm; 7 7/8x5 7/8 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). One of approximately only 20 proof impressions in this state, likely printed by the artist, before publication in Art et Nature, 1897 (in an edition of 500). Signed, titled and inscribed "no. 10 ep. defi." in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression.
Only 5 of Pissarro's 127 different etchings were published during his lifetime. He was extremely reluctant to turn over the printing of his plates to other printmakers. Therefore, he pulled most impressions of his etchings by himself and they were not editioned, in print runs of anywhere from approximately only 10 to 30 impressions of each subject.
The prominent figure in this etching of the country woman standing with a rake amidst piles of hay in a field derives from Pissarro's La Récolte des Foins, oil on canvas, 1887, now in a private collection, England (Pissarro/Snollaerts 848). Delteil 124.
